How an Instagram DM led to Jalen Hurts’ record-breaking contract

Nicole Lynn called her shot back in January.

And so Lynn, the agent for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, took a victory lap on Monday after negotiating a five-year, $255M contract for the 24-year-old QB that includes $179.3M guaranteed.

In terms of average annual value, Hurts’ $51M-per-year salary is the highest in NFL history. His contract boasts the second-most guaranteed money in NFL history, behind Deshaun Watson ($230M), and it’s the third-largest in terms of dollar value, behind Patrick Mahomes ($450M) and Josh Allen ($258M).

Lynn not only got Hurts an exorbitant amount of money, but she also worked in the first no-trade clause in Eagles history. All of this just weeks after being promoted to the president of football operations for Klutch Sports Group.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated last August, Lynn remembered connecting with Hurts on what she described as “a total Hail Mary.”

“Hey, have you picked an agent? If not, I’d love to link,” she said of the Instagram direct message she sent Hurts in Jan. 2020 after he finished his college career at Oklahoma, where Lynn attended for undergrad and law school.

“She said, ‘I’m a woman. People are going to overlook me. People are going to doubt me. They’re not going to give me the due respect. But I’m overcoming it, just like you do,’” Hurts recalled. “And that’s where we really hit it off. We had the same vision.”

Hurts was drafted No. 53 overall by the Eagles that year, starting just four games behind Carson Wentz. Just two years later, Hurts led the Eagles to a 14-1 record as their starter and the fourth Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.

He threw for 3,701 yards (eighth-most in franchise history) and 22 touchdowns while rushing for another 760 yards (third-most by a QB in team history) and 13 touchdowns while earning Second Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. Hurts’ 101.5 passer rating was the fifth-best in Eagles history.
